Organizing is one of the basic functions of management which is not only applicable in the corporate world but it also applicable in our day-to-day lives. Organizing in simple words refers to that process by which companies bring together all available resources at their disposal whether its labor, capital, machines, and process to achieve the objectives which are set by the company in the planning stage. It can be better understood with the help of an example suppose you have invited your friends for dinner then it is your responsibility to organize food for your friends, make proper sitting arrangements, ensure that they are comfortable from start to end and other related arrangments, the same thing applies to the company where companies have to ensure that all things are in proper order to so that there is no stoppage of work or any other problem hampering the working of the company. In order to get a better idea about this concept, one should look at some of the important features of organizing –
Organizing Characteristics
Comes after Planning
The first and foremost feature of organizing is that it comes after the planning function because if there is no plan then there is no use of organizing as organizing is done according to planning. Hence in the above case if you had not invited friends for dinner then you would not know and think about making food or doing other arrangements related to the party. In simple words just like a movie cannot be made without a story in the same way organizing is of no use if there is no proper plan in place.
Segregation of Work
In organizing function the management divides the work into smaller tasks and give those task to the various department according to the requirement of the overall goal. Hence in the case of smartphone manufacturers, the task of producing smartphones is given to the manufacturing department while the task of marketing those smartphones is given to the marketing department while the task of adding new features to smartphones is given to the research department and so on which makes the overall task of the company easy.
Assignment of Work at Micro Level
While segregation of work is done at the macro level but within that macro-level, there are many individuals to whom their work needs to be assigned which is done by the organizing function of management. Hence in the above example in the marketing department, there are many layers of the marketing team such as team leader, area sales manager, marketing executives and so on to whom the assignment of work needs to be done so that department as a shole can achieve the task efficiently and effectively.
Integration between Departments
Another important characteristic of organizing is integration between the various departments so that workflow is smooth and does not get hampered due to non-coordination between the departments of the company. Hence for example if the marketing department can source big order but due to noncommunication to the production department the production is no done then the order will get delayed resulting in loss to the company and hence organizing ensures that there is integration between various departments by establishing relationships between various departments of the company.
Choosing the Right Department
In the case of football if the player who is aggressive is given a defensive position and the defensive player is given forward player position then it will result in the team losing the match in the same way in case of companies if resources are not given to the right people and departments than it will result in non-achievement of the goal set out by the company as work can be completed only when right people are given the right job and organizing aim to do exactly that.
Never Ending Process
Another feature of organizing is that it is not a one time process rather it is a never-ending process in the sense that companies require this function permanently as in the case of corporates circumstances are not static rather dynamic and that is the reason why organizing needs to be done as an ongoing process and not a one time process.
As one can see from the above that organizing has some important features and that is the reason why no company can afford to miss this function of management as any laxity during the organizing stage can lead to failure in the achievement of goals and objectives set out by the company during the planning stage.
